Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is back in prime time with a show that pits comedian host Tom Papa and a panel of celebrity judges against couples with quirky marital issues.

The Marriage Ref aired a mini-episode on NBC on Sunday, February 28, 2010, immediately following the closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. This sneak preview featured celebrity panelists Kelly Ripa, Alec Baldwin and Jerry Seinfeld, who is also executive producer of the show. Marriage Ref will move to its regular time slot of Thursdays at 10 pm EST/9 pm CT, beginning with the premiere, March 4th. This episode features panelists Tina Fey and Eva Longoria, who will join Jerry Seinfeld and make recommendations to host Tom Papa.

Tom Papa Hosts New Marriage Show

Actor and comedian Tom Papa, was personally chosen by Seinfeld to host the new show. Papa and Seinfeld have toured together for eight years. TV viewers may remember Papa from his recent recurring role opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the CBS series, "The New Adventures of Old Christine." Papa describes his new job as Marriage Ref host to be "the perfect comedy storm". He says it gives him the chance to "do stand-up about marriage and family life, surrounded by other funny people".

How Does The Marriage Ref Work?

Couples have the opportunity to "present their case". The rotating cast of celebrity judges listens to both sides of the disagreement. They have the chance to question and interact with the featured couples. After discussion among the panel, opinions are offered to host, Tom Papa. It is Papa's job to make the final judgment and determine the victor. Episodes will feature arguments such as the husband who wants to stuff his dead dog and create a shrine for the pooch in the family home and the man who begs his wife to get, and use, a stripper pole in the bedroom.

The main idea of the show is that every married couple will be able to relate to the issues brought up by the featured couples. Seinfeld is quick to point out that "this is not a therapy show. It is a comedy show". Viewers are also invited to share their story by uploading a video to the show to be considered for a future episode. NBC needs to fill five weeknight time slots with Jay Leno leaving prime time to return to his 11:30 pm Tonight Show. Time will tell if the ratings boost offered by the Winter Olympics closing ceremonies will continue to propel The Marriage Ref into a lucrative position for Thursday nights.
